Sea freight

Best for tanks, cages, drum filters and heavy skids. Plan for port clearance and inland trucking.

Air freight

Useful for sensors, controllers, spare parts and urgent small components. Cost scales with weight and volume.

DAP delivery

The exporter manages freight and customs to your farm gate. Simplifies budgeting but requires clear unloading terms.

FOB / CIF

FOB hands over risk at the port; CIF adds insurance and freight to destination port. Both require buyer-side import handling.

Common mistakes when buying aquaculture equipment internationally

Comparing list prices instead of landed cost

FOB price, freight, insurance, duties, customs fees and inland transport can double the apparent cost. Always compare on a single Incoterm and include commissioning.

Ignoring spare-parts lead times

A failed sensor or pump with a 12-week replacement lead time can shut down production. Negotiate a strategic spares kit as part of the initial order.

Skipping factory acceptance testing

Custom tanks, RAS skids and control panels should be inspected before shipment. Rework at the farm is far more expensive than rework at the factory.

Undersizing logistics for bulky items

Large tanks, cages and drum filters may need flat-rack containers, special road permits or crane offload. Plan these before the vessel arrives.

Treating commissioning as optional
