Fish Feed Mill Planning for Aquaculture Projects
Capacity, extrusion, drying, raw materials and automation: how commercial aquaculture feed mill projects are scoped before suppliers quote.
A feed mill is scoped from annual tonnage, species and pellet size range, converted into tonnes per hour at a realistic number of operating hours. Nominal throughput at the largest pellet size is not the same as throughput on the sizes the mill will actually run.
Size the demand before the line
If the mill serves your own farms, derive tonnage from the production plan using the feed consumption calculator and the feed budget calculator rather than from a round number.
Balance the whole line, not the extruder
Grinding, mixing, conditioning, extrusion, drying, coating, cooling and bagging must all match. The dryer is the most common bottleneck in projects sized on extruder capacity alone.
Raw material strategy
Local versus imported meals and oils, seasonal availability, moisture handling and storage volumes for continuity of production — this determines intake and storage design as much as the formulation does.
Formulation and quality control
Shrimp feed, tilapia feed and marine fish feed differ in binding, water stability, oil inclusion and pellet size distribution, and the laboratory scope should reflect that.
Utilities, civil works and energy
Boiler and steam, compressed air, electrical infrastructure, dust control and fire safety, plus the building height an extrusion and drying line requires. Energy per tonne is a core comparison metric — model the tariff exposure with the energy cost calculator and the connection with the power requirement calculator.
Automation level
Recipe management, batching accuracy, weighing, traceability and process data logging drive labour cost and product consistency.
Document tonnage, species mix, pellet sizes, raw materials, automation level and site utilities following the RFQ guide, and proposals become comparable on capacity, energy per tonne and wear-part cost rather than headline price. See feed mill equipment in Brazil for a country example, review the CAPEX guide, then start a reviewed RFQ.
