1. References from projects like yours, not their best project

Ask for two references at your species, your climate zone and roughly your scale — and one from a project that had problems. How a supplier behaves when something fails on site is the single best predictor of your own experience. 2. Guarantees with teeth

Performance guarantees should state the number, the test method, the conditions, and the remedy. "O2 transfer ≥ 2.1 kg O2/kWh at 25 °C, verified by ASCE clean-water test on site, liquidated damages if missed" is a guarantee. "High efficiency oxygenation" is a slogan. Suppliers who build commercial systems already have these clauses; suppliers who resist them are telling you something.

3. Spares and service geography

A drum filter that needs a screen panel from another continent, with a six-week lead time, is a biosecurity risk wearing a logo. Ask where spares are stocked, the guaranteed response time for critical parts, and whether local service partners exist in your country. For remote sites this single factor outweighs most price differences.

4. Commissioning and training scope

Clarify who commissions, for how many days, at whose cost, and what "handover" means: a signed performance test at design load, or a wave from the dock. Training scope matters equally — your operators, not the supplier's engineers, will run the system for the next fifteen years.

5. Engineering depth behind the sales contact

Ask a technical question that requires calculation — recheck your oxygen balance at peak feed, or the head loss through their proposed pipework. The speed and quality of the answer reveals whether there is an engineering team or a reseller with a catalogue. Both can be legitimate, but you should know which one you are buying from.

6. Financial staying power

A ten-year warranty from a company that may not exist in three years is marketing. Company age, export track record and payment terms that do not demand 100% upfront are all signals. Extremely low prices combined with aggressive prepayment terms are a known failure pattern in this sector.
