Certified organic aquaculture products

Seafood that can legally carry the word organic in the market you sell into — and the documents that prove it. Sustainability attributes are shown separately, never as organic.

Short answer: Aquaculture products are organic only when a current certificate under the destination's organic law covers the exact species, site and product. The EU regulates organic fish, shrimp and bivalves; the USDA has no organic standard for farmed fish or shrimp. Sustainability certification is not organic.

How FishMatch treats the word organic

  • Certified, not claimed

Organic only with a current certificate under the destination's organic law covering the exact species, site and product.

  • Destination decides

EU organic rules cover aquaculture; the USDA has no organic standard for farmed fish or shrimp.

  • Sustainable ≠ organic

Responsible-farming certificates, low density or antibiotic-free claims are sustainability attributes, not organic.

  • Producer responsible

The producer, exporter and control body are responsible for the claim; FishMatch does not certify.

Sustainable is not the same as organic

Organic

A legal claim defined by the selling market's organic law, checked by an authorised control body. Covers feed, breeding, treatments, density and production systems.

Sustainability attributes

Responsible-farming certificates, low stocking density, antibiotic-free or traceability claims. Useful buyer requirements — but they do not allow the word organic. State them as separate fields in your RFQ.
