Short answer

What do aquaculture projects in Norway actually buy?

Norwegian projects are salmon and trout at the highest project values in the industry: NS 9415-compliant sea cages and mooring, land-based post-smolt RAS, oxygenation, welfare and delousing systems, feed barges and processing. Competition is strong, so the sourcing value is compliance depth and supplier access, not price.

Local production context

  • NS 9415 governs the design, dimensioning and certification of floating fish-farm installations — cage, net and mooring supply must be documented to it, which excludes generic imports.
  • Growth is concentrated in post-smolt RAS, where fish are held longer on land to shorten the marine phase; these are large, engineered facilities.
  • Fish welfare and lice management drive continuous investment in non-medicinal delousing, sensors, cameras and handling systems.
  • Buyers are technically sophisticated and audit suppliers heavily; documentation, certification and service capability decide the award.

Norway project questions, answered

What is NS 9415 and why does it matter when buying cages?
NS 9415 is the Norwegian standard for the design, dimensioning, installation and operation of floating aquaculture installations. Cages, nets and mooring must be dimensioned against site-specific environmental data and supplied with certification and documentation. A cage package without that documentation cannot be lawfully deployed, which is why the site survey precedes the quotation.
Why are salmon producers investing in post-smolt RAS?
Holding fish on land to a larger size shortens the marine grow-out phase, which reduces exposure to lice, disease and site limitations and improves site utilisation. The trade-off is a large land-based CAPEX with substantial filtration, oxygen and energy demand.
What should a Norwegian aquaculture RFQ contain?
Site environmental data (wave, current, depth), licensed biomass, target production plan, applicable standard and certification requirements, integration with existing systems, and expected service and spare-part response times.
