Shrimp export origins: where Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Viet Nam, Thailand and Argentina ship, and what buyers check
Short answer: on 2024 customs data, Ecuador and India are the two largest frozen shrimp exporters, shipping mainly farmed whiteleg shrimp (vannamei), with China and the United States as their largest markets. Thailand and Viet Nam sell a large share as cooked, peeled or breaded products, which customs records under a different code. Argentina's red shrimp is wild-caught at sea, so it faces different rules from farmed shrimp. Each figure below shows its source, the date we read it and whether it is verified or still needs confirmation.

Farmed, wild, raw and value-added: four separate things
Do not compare offers, figures or rules across these lines. A customs code tells you the product form, not whether the shrimp was farmed or wild.
| Product line | What it is | Why it matters to a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Farmed warm-water shrimp | Pond- or tank-raised shrimp, mainly whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) and black tiger (Penaeus monodon). This is the bulk of exports from Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Viet Nam and Thailand. | Residue controls for aquaculture apply (for example the EU's approved residue plans), and US traceability records the farm. No catch certificate is needed in the EU for products farmed from larvae. |
| Wild-caught shrimp | Shrimp caught at sea, such as Argentine red shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) or cold-water shrimp (Pandalus, Crangon). Some exporters in farming countries also process wild species separately. | Wild catch needs an IUU catch certificate in the EU and Great Britain, and US Section 609 sea-turtle rules apply. Size, colour and season differ from farmed product, so offers are not interchangeable. |
| Raw or cooked-in-shell frozen shrimp | Head-on, headless, peeled and deveined raw shrimp, frozen in blocks or individually (IQF). Shrimp cooked in the shell by steaming or boiling stays in the same customs heading. | Recorded under HS 0306. Count size, glaze, soaking agents and freezing method decide the real net weight you pay for. |
| Prepared or value-added shrimp | Cooked and peeled, breaded, marinated, skewered, tempura, dim sum or ready meals. | Recorded under HS 1605, a separate customs line with its own figures. Recipe, allergens, labelling and the processing plant's approval all matter more than for raw product. |
Customs codes for shrimp
| Code | Covers | Note | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0306.17 | Frozen shrimps and prawns other than cold-water species | Most farmed vannamei and black tiger, and also wild warm-water species such as Argentine red shrimp. | Verified |
| 0306.16 | Frozen cold-water shrimps and prawns (Pandalus spp., Crangon crangon) | Cold-water species; not the farmed warm-water shrimp from the six origins on this page. | Verified |
| 0306.36 / 0306.35 | Live, fresh or chilled shrimps and prawns (other / cold-water) | Not frozen. | Verified |
| 0306.95 | Shrimps and prawns in the heading's other forms | For example dried, salted, in brine or smoked, within the limits of heading 0306. | Verified |
| 1605.21 / 1605.29 | Prepared or preserved shrimps and prawns (not in an airtight container / other) | Value-added and cooked-peeled products. | Verified |
| 030613 (older) | All frozen shrimps and prawns in the HS 1988/92 version | The long-run trade tables on this page use this older code, so their frozen figures combine farmed and wild, cold-water and warm-water shrimp. | Verified |
| Farmed or wild? | Not shown by any six-digit HS code | The codes separate species group, form and packaging only. Ask for the production method in the specification and on the documents; China's label rules require it. | Verified |

Questions buyers ask
Which countries export the most frozen shrimp?
On 2024 customs data (HS 030613), Ecuador led with US$6.34 billion, followed by India, Indonesia, Argentina and Thailand. Viet Nam is a major shrimp exporter too, but sells much of it as prepared products and its 2024 partner data is not yet in WITS.
Is Argentine red shrimp farmed?
No. Argentine red shrimp (langostino, Pleoticus muelleri) is caught at sea in a managed fishery. It needs catch documentation in the EU and Great Britain and falls under US Section 609, unlike farmed vannamei.
Does the customs code show whether shrimp is farmed or wild?
No. HS codes separate cold-water from other shrimp, frozen from fresh, and raw from prepared. State the production method in your specification and check it on the documents.
Which US duties apply to shrimp from these origins?
Frozen warmwater shrimp is under antidumping orders from China, India, Thailand, Viet Nam and Indonesia, and countervailing duty orders from Ecuador, India and Viet Nam. Rates are exporter-specific and change after reviews, so check the current order with your customs broker.
Does FishMatch publish exporter names or let me contact exporters?
No. We don't publish producer names or rankings, and buyers and producers don't contact each other directly. Our team reviews your request, checks the destination rules and approaches suitable producers for you.
What size of request does FishMatch accept?
Requests are free for buyers. We take on annual or seasonal programs of USD 250,000 or more; smaller requests are saved and pointed to our free tools.
