Biosecurity is the systemic prevention of pathogen introduction, spread and impact in an aquaculture facility — the single highest-ROI CAPEX after core life-support. A well-designed biosecurity program costs 3–7% of total CAPEX and prevents losses that routinely reach 100% of a stocked cohort.

The five biosecurity control layers

Zoning; incoming-water treatment (UV / ozone / filtration); animal-input QA (SPF certification, PCR screening, quarantine); staff/vehicle/equipment decontamination; outbreak response plan with pre-authorised destruction and disinfection protocols.

Incoming-water disinfection

Every water source is a pathogen vector. UV, ozone, chlorine + dechlorination, filtration and settlement each have specific pathogen-kill profiles. Design the water treatment train around the highest-risk pathogen for your species.

Quarantine and stress-testing incoming animals

Every incoming batch — broodstock, PL, fingerlings, live feed — passes quarantine with PCR screening, a stress-test cohort and documented incubation before entering the main system.

Response plan: assume outbreaks happen

Every commercial facility needs a written outbreak response plan: isolation, sampling, laboratory confirmation, regulatory notification, staged destruction, disinfection and re-stocking protocols. Rehearse it annually.
