Shipping RAS Equipment Internationally: Containers, Packing and Delivery
A RAS is not one machine. It is tanks, drum filters, biofilters, pumps, oxygen cones, UV units, pipework, sensors and control panels, often from several factories. Shipping it well means treating logistics as part of the design, not an afterthought once the purchase order is signed.
Start from the packing list, not the quote
Ask every supplier for a draft packing list at proposal stage: item, quantity, dimensions, gross weight and how it is packed. Large tanks, nested tank sections and long pipe bundles decide how many containers you need far more than the equipment value does. Without this list, freight can only be guessed.
Choosing container types
Standard 20ft and 40ft containers suit pumps, filters, panels and boxed parts. 40ft high-cube units help with tall items such as oxygen cones or stacked tank panels. Oversized tanks or skids may need open-top or flat-rack containers, which cost more and are booked further ahead. Sectional or knock-down tanks assembled on site usually ship far more efficiently than one-piece tanks.
Packing and protection
Electronics, sensors and control cabinets need moisture protection and shock-safe crating. Pipe ends should be capped, membranes and media bagged, and every crate marked with a tag that matches the packing list and the installation drawings. Clear marking saves days during site assembly.
Inspection before loading
A pre-shipment inspection — by the buyer, an engineer or a third-party inspector — checks that what is loaded matches the specification and the packing list. Fixing a missing part at the factory is cheap; flying it in after the container lands is not.
Customs paperwork
Expect a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin and the correct HS codes for each item group. Some countries also require conformity certificates for electrical equipment. Agree with the supplier early who prepares which document, because a single mismatch between invoice and packing list can hold a shipment at port.
Where projects lose time
The usual delays are late factory completion, missing documents, port congestion, and the local trucking and crane work from port to site. Build buffer into the installation schedule and make sure the site — slab, power and access road — is ready before the containers arrive.
