Start from the contracted tonnage and delivery calendar, not from an equipment list. Convert the additional volume into standing biomass, feed tonnage, oxygen demand, water exchange, juvenile requirement and harvest rate at the peak week — not the annual average. Compare each of those figures with the installed capacity you have today. The systems with no headroom are the project; everything else stays as it is. Only then does it make sense to price equipment and issue an RFQ, because contract penalties make an under-sized system far more expensive than the equipment saved.

How to diagnose it, in order
- 1Convert the contract into biomass
Translate contracted tonnage and delivery dates into standing biomass by month, including the peak week that everything must be sized for.
- 2Recalculate feed demand
Additional biomass means additional feed tonnage, storage volume, delivery frequency and feeding capacity per day.
- 3Recalculate oxygen demand
Oxygen demand rises with biomass, feeding rate and temperature. Verify installed aeration and emergency oxygen against the worst-case night at peak biomass.
- 4Check water and pumping
Exchange rate, intake capacity, pumping head and treatment duty all scale with the new load and with the organic load from extra feed.
- 5Check electrical capacity
Grid headroom, transformer capacity, distribution and standby generation are frequently the hard limit on a production increase.
- 6Check juvenile supply
More grow-out means more post-larvae or fingerlings on a reliable calendar — hatchery or nursery capacity often becomes the true bottleneck.
- 7Check harvest and cold chain
Harvest rate, ice, chilling and cold storage must absorb the larger batches within the same quality window.
- 8Price the gap and issue an RFQ
Turn only the constrained systems into a scoped, comparable RFQ with the same assumptions given to every supplier.
