Where the money goes each year
The single biggest driver. Imported vannamei feed lands in Tema at a premium over Asian ex-works pricing; local extrusion changes the whole business case.
Ghana has no large SPF vannamei hatchery at scale, so most projects import PL or budget for an on-site nursery.
Grid instability means generator backup or solar hybrid is normally a design requirement, not an option.
Competitive versus Asia and Latin America; technical supervision is the scarce input, not general labour.

Most Ghanaian projects start by looking for animal feed companies in Ghana, then discover that poultry and tilapia feed mills cannot produce a water-stable sinking shrimp pellet without a dedicated extrusion and coating line.
Standard route for the first 1–2 cycles: 35–40% crude protein vannamei grower, imported in 25 kg bags via Tema. Plan for 60–90 days of lead time and duty on landed cost.

Where projects are sited
Brackish lagoon systems with existing artisanal aquaculture, good salinity for vannamei, but seasonal salinity swings that require a reservoir pond.
Flat coastal land, salt-industry infrastructure and access to seawater; permitting involves Ramsar-sensitive zones so environmental screening comes first.
Best for biofloc, nursery and processing: grid power, port access for imported feed and PL, and proximity to hotel and retail demand.
Deep-water port access and industrial services; suits integrated farm plus processing projects aimed at regional export.

Financing a Ghanaian shrimp project
Most Ghana projects are funded with a mix of equipment leasing on aeration, pumping and cold-chain packages, term debt from agri or development lenders for civil works, and supplier or ECA-backed buyer credit on imported equipment. Lenders consistently ask for the same four things: a bankable feasibility study, permits at least in progress, evidence of offtake, and a contingency line of 10–15%.
