Fish & Shrimp Hatcheries

A commercial hatchery produces juvenile fish (fry, fingerlings) or shrimp post-larvae from broodstock through controlled reproduction, incubation, larval rearing and nursery stages. Hatchery quality determines the biological ceiling of every downstream grow-out farm — get it wrong and no amount of grow-out sophistication recovers the loss.

Why the hatchery is the highest-leverage CAPEX in the value chain

A well-run hatchery delivers uniform, disease-free, genetically appropriate juveniles year-round. This directly compounds into grow-out FCR, survival, and days-to-harvest across every downstream cycle.

Broodstock management fundamentals

Selection, quarantine, nutrition, photoperiod control, PIT tagging and disease screening. SPF broodstock is table stakes for shrimp; increasingly mandatory for salmon and marine fin-fish.

Larval rearing and live feed

Rotifer and Artemia production, microalgae culture, larval feeding schedules and water quality management drive survival from egg to juvenile.

Biosecurity: air-lock the whole facility

Separate zones for broodstock, larvae, live feed and nursery. Dedicated staff per zone. Foot baths, incoming-water disinfection, quarantine incoming shipments. This is not optional.

Commercial hatchery CAPEX and RFQ scope

Fish hatchery: USD 2–8M for 5–20M fry/yr capacity. Shrimp hatchery: USD 3–10M for 500M–2B PL/yr. RFQ scope must cover broodstock system, incubation, larval, nursery, live feed, water treatment, biosecurity, SCADA and lab equipment as one integrated package.
