A hatchery is bought as a production protocol, not as a list of tanks. Fix species, stage-by-stage output and water conditions first, then specify each system so competing suppliers quote the same duty.

What does a commercial hatchery system package include?

A commercial hatchery package covers segregated broodstock holding with photoperiod and temperature control, spawning and incubation, larval rearing tanks, live-feed or weaning capacity appropriate to the species, source-water treatment (filtration plus UV or ozone), heating or chilling, oxygenation, monitoring and alarms, effluent handling, and zoned biosecurity. Each of these has a duty figure — flow, volume, temperature range, redundancy — that should come from the production protocol. Scope to define before sourcing

Broodstock and spawning

Segregated tanks, photoperiod and temperature control, conditioning feed program, quarantine separate from production, spawning and egg-collection arrangements, and genetic record keeping.

Incubation and larval rearing

Incubators or conical larval tanks sized to batch plan, gentle aeration, green-water capability where the species needs it, and tank surfaces and drains suited to frequent disinfection.

Live feed and weaning

Marine finfish and shrimp normally need microalgae, rotifer or artemia capacity sized above peak larval demand. Freshwater species usually wean earlier onto dry diets. Specify which applies before quoting hall space.

Water treatment

Source characterisation, mechanical filtration, cartridge polishing, UV or ozone, temperature control, and partial or full recirculation loops per zone with defined makeup rates.

Monitoring and controls

Dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity, pH and TAN on critical tanks, SCADA or PLC with mobile alarms, and defined manual sampling for microbiology and larval health.

Biosecurity and redundancy

Zoning between broodstock, larval, weaning and nursery, air locks and foot baths, effluent disinfection, backup power and backup oxygen with stated hold-up time.

What equipment does a commercial aquaculture project actually need?

A grow-out project typically needs holding infrastructure (tanks, ponds or cages), water movement (pumps, piping, valves), aeration or oxygenation, water treatment appropriate to the system, feeding equipment, grading and handling gear, monitoring and alarms, and backup power. RAS adds mechanical filtration, biofiltration, degassing, disinfection and tighter process control. Hatchery and processing scopes are specified separately.

Which equipment should be specified before requesting quotes?

Specify the items whose sizing changes everything downstream: design biomass and stocking density, water exchange or recirculation rate, oxygen demand at peak temperature, and installed pumping head.
