BAP is the dominant sustainability certification in North American retail (Walmart, Costco, Sysco, US Foods, and many restaurant chains). BAP's multi-tier (1–4 star) approach lets integrated producers layer certifications across farm, hatchery, feed and processing.
The BAP star system
One star (processing plant only), two star (processing + farm), three star (processing + farm + hatchery or feed), four star (processing + farm + hatchery + feed). Retail buyers use star rating to differentiate; four-star producers command premium.
Farm-level requirements
Environmental (effluent, escapes, ecological impact), community, food safety, animal welfare and traceability. Species-specific supplementary requirements for salmon, shrimp, tilapia and others.
Certification body and audit cycle
BAP is managed by the Global Seafood Alliance (formerly GAA). Certification bodies audit against BAP standards on annual cycles. Gap analysis before first audit reduces remediation costs by 30–50%.
Errores comunes
- Certifying farm only and losing star ratings that retailers reward.
- Missing hatchery certification when the addressable retail requires it.
- Under-investing in feed-mill certification (major star-rating driver).
- Assuming BAP audits accept ASC evidence (they do not; overlap is not equivalence).

- Species-specific BAP Farm Standard applied and gap-analysed.
- Hatchery, feed mill and processing certifications planned in sequence.
