Guía de certificación ASC

ASC es la principal certificación de sostenibilidad para retail europeo, cubriendo desempeño ambiental, social y trazabilidad a nivel de granja, con cadena de custodia que continúa por procesadores y distribuidores.

Por qué importa

ASC is the leading sustainability certification for European retail. Producers not carrying ASC face reduced access to Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Lidl and Carrefour categories, and lower price realisation across most premium channels.

What ASC covers

Environmental impact (effluent, escapes, feed sustainability), animal health and welfare, social responsibility (labour, community) and traceability. The certification is issued at farm level; onward chain-of-custody is a separate certification covering processors and distributors.

How ASC differs from BAP

ASC is species-standard-based, single-tier, with an intense environmental and social focus. BAP is multi-tier (1–4 star, covering farm, hatchery, feed, processing), with a stronger US retail footprint. Choose based on target market first; certify to both if the addressable market justifies the cost.

The realistic certification timeline

Planning: 1–2 months. Gap analysis: 1–2 months. Remediation: 3–9 months. Third-party audit: 1–2 months. Certification decision and publication: 1–2 months. Total: 6–18 months. Larger operations at the top of the range.

Budgeting ASC certification

Certification body fees plus internal remediation typically run USD 50K–250K for the first cycle depending on scale. Annual surveillance audits run USD 15K–60K. Feed sustainability compliance can add significantly if incumbent feed suppliers are not ASC-compliant.

Errores comunes

  • Applying without a gap analysis — 60–80% of first audits find major non-conformities.
  • Under-investing in feed traceability (ASC Feed Standard is increasingly linked).
  • Missing chain-of-custody at the processor (CoC is a separate certification).
  • Treating certification as a one-time cost rather than an ongoing programme.

Checklist del comprador

  • Species-specific ASC standard identified and gap-analysed.
  • Effluent, escapes and predator management aligned to standard.
  • Feed sourcing traceable back to ASC Feed Standard suppliers.
  • Social requirements met: labour rights, community engagement, fair wages documented.
  • Chain-of-Custody certification arranged for the processor and any repackers.
  • Annual audit budget provisioned; renewal cycle scheduled.
