RAS for Salmon

Recirculating Aquaculture Systems for Atlantic salmon are one of the most technically demanding branches of commercial aquaculture. Success depends on tight coupling of biology, water chemistry and energy engineering.

Where RAS fits in salmon production

Land-based RAS today covers three stages: smolt (up to ~120g), post-smolt (up to ~1kg) and full grow-out. Post-smolt RAS reduces sea-time and disease exposure; grow-out RAS decouples production from sea licenses entirely.

Design drivers

Water chemistry (DO, TAN, CO₂, NO₂, NO₃, salinity), temperature stability, and specific energy determine bankability more than any single piece of equipment.

  • Design DO ≥ 8–10 mg/L at fish level
  • TAN ≤ 1 mg/L
  • CO₂ ≤ 15 mg/L
  • Specific energy 4–8 kWh/kg (varies by stage)

Key risks

Biological instability during scale-up, off-flavour (geosmin/MIB), and grid outages remain the top three risks. Redundancy planning is not optional.
