Fish Health & Biosecurity

Fish health and biosecurity are the single largest driver of unit economics after feed. A commercial aquaculture project succeeds or fails on whether pathogens are kept out, detected early and contained — not on any single piece of equipment.

Farm-level biosecurity zones

Bankable projects separate the site into clean, transitional and production zones with controlled personnel, vehicle, water and equipment flow. Footbaths, dedicated boots, disinfection stations and one-way workflow are baseline, not premium features.

  • Perimeter fencing and controlled access
  • Personnel disinfection at every zone change
  • Dedicated tools per production zone
  • Vehicle wash-down before entry
  • Bird, rodent and predator control

Water and inlet biosecurity

Inlet water is the highest-risk vector after live animals. Design decisions here — UV, ozone, drum filters, sand filters, quarantine reservoirs — set the ceiling on disease-free performance.

  • UV dose 30–60 mJ/cm² for viruses at incoming
  • Ozone with residual removal before fish contact
  • Quarantine reservoirs with dwell time
  • Redundant treatment trains for critical sites

Broodstock, PL and fingerling health

Only source from SPF (Specific Pathogen Free) or SPR (Specific Pathogen Resistant) hatcheries with documented PCR panels. In shrimp, PL quality is the single largest lever on farm profitability. In fin-fish, vaccinated fingerlings from certified hatcheries drop mortality dramatically.

Monitoring, diagnostics and early warning

Daily mortality logs, weekly water-quality trends, monthly PCR panels and continuous DO/temperature sensors together create the early-warning stack. Farms that invest in in-house PCR or partner with regional diagnostic labs consistently outperform farms that only test when problems appear.

Vaccination and immunoprophylaxis

Vaccination is standard practice in salmon (against IPN, ISA, furunculosis, vibriosis) and increasingly used in tilapia (against Streptococcus) and other finfish. Vaccination is delivered by injection, dip or oral routes, usually before transfer to grow-out. Vaccinated stocks show measurably lower antibiotic use and mortality.

Outbreak response and depopulation

Every commercial farm should have a written outbreak-response SOP: sampling protocol, notification chain, movement restrictions, treatment options and — in the worst case — depopulation and disinfection procedures. Insurance and lender covenants often require this document.
