Comparing RAS suppliers without comparing apples to oranges
RAS offers are only comparable once you normalise four things: the biological design basis each supplier used, the treatment train and its sizing logic, the redundancy and failure philosophy, and the exclusions. Two systems quoted for the same tonnage can differ by a large factor purely because one assumed a lower feed load or excluded buildings, oxygen supply and backup power.
- Ask every supplier to state peak daily feed load and design temperature on the first page.
- Normalise on kg feed/day treated, not on tank volume or nominal tonnage.
- Redundancy philosophy (N, N+1) is a cost driver and a risk decision the owner must make, not the supplier.
- Exclusions — building, oxygen, backup power, effluent treatment — often exceed the difference between offers.
Normalise the design basis first
A recirculating system is sized on feed load, temperature and target water quality, not on the marketing tonnage. Request the design table: peak feed kg/day, design temperature, target TAN, nitrite and CO2 limits, and the assumed daily exchange rate. Once those are on one page for each bidder, most of the apparent price gap explains itself.
Treatment train and sizing logic
- Mechanical filtration: drum filter screen size, hydraulic capacity, backwash water consumption.
- Biofiltration: type (MBBR, fixed bed, trickling), media volume, specific surface area and the assumed TAN removal rate.
- Degassing and oxygenation: CO2 stripping method, oxygen source and dissolution equipment, redundancy of supply.
- Disinfection: UV dose or ozone dosing basis and the water stream it treats.
- Solids and effluent handling: thickening, storage and discharge assumptions.
Redundancy and failure philosophy
Decide with the client, before issuing the RFQ, what a single equipment failure is allowed to do. Full N+1 on pumps, blowers and oxygen supply costs more up front and reduces catastrophic-loss exposure. Suppliers cannot make that call and will each assume something different if you do not state it.
Energy and operating cost
Ask for an installed-power schedule and an estimated operating-power profile at design load, with the assumptions written out. Compare energy across offers on the same tariff and running-hour assumptions. Treat all supplier operating-cost figures as indicative estimates that require independent verification against local conditions.
