How to Choose Aquaculture Equipment Suppliers for Large Commercial Projects
Why supplier selection is the single biggest project risk
On a USD 10–50M aquaculture project, the difference between a well-selected supplier and a badly selected one is measured not in the purchase order — it is measured in the eight-figure production shortfall over the following decade. 6. Remote diagnostics
SCADA export, remote log-in for the OEM and a defined SLA for engineering support.
7. Training & handover
On-site training for operators, documented SOPs, and a train-the-trainer program.
8. Financial standing
Audited financials, credit report and evidence of ability to bond performance.
RAS suppliers — how to compare
RAS suppliers differ mainly in filtration architecture, oxygen delivery, disinfection strategy and level of water reuse. The right choice depends on species, density and permit constraints — not on which supplier's brochure is glossiest.

Water treatment suppliers
Water treatment is the plumbing of the operation. Evaluate suppliers on three axes: (1) mechanical filtration up to 40–60 µm without breakdowns, (2) sizing of biofilters based on peak feed load rather than average, and (3) redundancy — a single-string water treatment plant has no place in a serious project. Ask specifically about biofilm activation time and start-up support, because the biological ramp-up (4–8 weeks) is where most first-time RAS projects lose their first cohort.
Aeration suppliers
Aeration equipment for pond farms is often over-simplified in procurement. Oxygen transfer rate (OTR, kg O₂ / kWh) matters more than horsepower, and reliability under 24/7 tropical conditions matters more than peak performance. The table below summarizes the five dominant technologies.

Feed system suppliers
Feed automation delivers the fastest payback in the entire facility. Modern systems combine central kitchens, pneumatic distribution, in-tank cameras and acoustic sensors. Evaluate suppliers on (1) integration with your SCADA, (2) feed accuracy at low pellet sizes, and (3) response-based feeding algorithms rather than fixed schedules. A 2–4% reduction in feed waste on a mid-size project pays back the entire feed system within 18 months.
Warranty, installation & commissioning
Warranty terms are where projects quietly lose their leverage. Insist on 24-month component warranty from date of commissioning and a written performance warranty covering water quality, uptime and, where possible, growth performance during the ramp-up phase. Installation should be executed or supervised by the OEM, and commissioning must include documented biological ramp-up and a formal takeover certificate signed only after acceptance tests pass.
Maintenance & spare parts
Aquaculture is 24/7. A pump that fails at 3 a.m. cannot wait three weeks for ocean freight. Serious suppliers commit in writing to (1) local or regional spare-parts stock, (2) a defined SLA for critical components, (3) 10–15 year spare-parts availability, and (4) documented preventive-maintenance schedules with recommended stock levels for the buyer.
Risk reduction & international sourcing
