A drum filter, a paddlewheel aerator and an oxygen cone can all be excellent products and still be the wrong specification for a site. The commercial consequence is familiar to anyone who has run a tender. Five suppliers return five quotations built on five different sets of assumptions about biomass, exchange rate, temperature and redundancy. What a serious fish or shrimp project actually needs
Before any supplier conversation is useful, a project should be described in terms an engineering team can quote against. The list below is the minimum FishMatch works through during human review.
- Species and production model — vannamei shrimp, tilapia, salmonids, marine or freshwater finfish, or a hatchery-led programme; each drives different water, temperature and handling requirements.
- System type — recirculating aquaculture (RAS), ponds, cages, flow-through, hatchery or a hybrid arrangement with a nursery stage.
- Target production capacity — annual tonnage, harvest pattern and whether the site is phased or built to full capacity at once.
- Water source and quality — borehole, surface, sea or municipal supply, with measured parameters rather than assumptions.
- Biosecurity — quarantine, intake treatment, zoning, personnel flow and disease-history exposure in the region.
- Energy reliability — grid stability, backup generation, and what happens to oxygenation during an outage.
- Oxygenation, aeration and filtration — the mechanical and biological treatment train sized to the feed load, not to a catalogue page.
- Feed systems — feed type, storage, delivery, automation level and FCR assumptions used in the plan.
- Local climate and environmental constraints — temperature range, effluent rules, permitting and land or water concessions.
- Processing, cold chain and export requirements — whether the project sells live, fresh, chilled or frozen, and to which market.
- Installation, commissioning, training, maintenance and spare parts — who installs, who trains the operators, and how parts arrive two years later.
The FishMatch project-RFQ model
FishMatch works buyer-side first. A project is submitted, a person reviews it, and the gaps are identified before any supplier is approached.
Human review means a real reading of the project: the production target against the water budget, the system choice against the energy situation, the timeline against manufacturing and commissioning realities. Where information is missing, clarification is requested. Where the plan carries an assumption that will change the price materially, the assumption is written down so that every supplier quotes against the same figure.
Only then is a structured RFQ prepared. The RFQ states the production model, capacities, water and site conditions, treatment requirements, scope boundaries, installation and service expectations, documentation requirements and the response format. Suppliers receive the same document, so the returned quotations can be compared line by line.
Outreach is capability-based. Suppliers are approached because their demonstrated scope, experience and support capacity fit the reviewed project — not because they paid for a position. Communication is then managed through the process so that technical questions reach the buyer in a consolidated form instead of as a dozen separate threads.
What the model deliberately excludes matters as much as what it includes. There is no open directory, no paid ranking, no automatic buyer-to-supplier handoff, and no guarantee of buyers, orders, RFQs or contracts for any supplier. FishMatch is not a lender and does not certify manufacturers.
Chinese aquaculture manufacturing capability
Chinese manufacturers have built deep capability across the aquaculture equipment stack: RAS treatment trains, drum and disc filtration, biofilter media, oxygen and aeration systems, automated feeding, HDPE and steel cage systems, hatchery and nursery equipment, water-quality monitoring, processing lines and farm automation. For many international projects they are a credible and competitive part of the supplier set.
That capability is not uniform, and nationality is not a selection criterion in either direction. What decides suitability is project fit: does the manufacturer have documented experience with this species and system type, is it export-ready for the destination market and its standards, does it have the engineering competence for the required scope rather than only the components, and can it support installation, commissioning and spare parts at distance.
A trading company can be an appropriate partner for some scopes and a poor fit for others; the same is true of a factory without international project experience. The point of a clarified RFQ is that these differences become visible in the responses rather than after the container arrives.

The practical test of any procurement process is whether the buyer can explain the difference between two quotations. When scope, capacity, water conditions and service expectations are fixed in advance, a price difference points to a genuine engineering or commercial choice: different filtration sizing, different redundancy, a different installation model, different documentation.
