What the CAPEX quote is asked to itemise

These are the line items the published shrimp-farm budgets break out. Each line is quoted separately, with what is included, excluded and assumed, so pond, biofloc and indoor RAS options can be compared on the same harvest target.

Land, survey and permits
Land or lease, topographic and soil survey, water-use, discharge and environmental approvals — kept apart from construction.
Earthworks and pond construction
Excavation, dykes, compaction, inlet and outlet structures, drainage and access roads.
Liners, tanks and covers
Liner grade and thickness, seams and testing; or tanks, raceways and greenhouse/building covers for biofloc and RAS.
Water intake, pumps and reservoirs
Intake, screens, pumps at their duty point, pipework, reservoir and settling ponds.
Aeration and oxygen
Aerators or blowers and diffusers sized from peak biomass and oxygen demand, with backup. A major capital line in the published pond budgets.
Electrical supply and backup power
Grid connection or transformer, cabling, panels, generators and automatic transfer.
Water treatment and effluent
Filtration, biofiltration for RAS, sludge handling and effluent treatment to the discharge permit.
Biosecurity
Crab and bird fencing, disinfection points, stage separation and quarantine areas.
Buildings and laboratory
Pump house, feed and equipment stores, office, water-quality laboratory and staff facilities.
Nursery or hatchery (if in scope)
Nursery raceways or hatchery units, with their own water, heating and biosecurity.
Feeding, monitoring and harvest
Feeders, dissolved-oxygen and water-quality sensors, alarms, harvest and chilling interfaces.
Design, installation and commissioning
Engineering, freight, installation, testing under load, operator training and spare parts.
Contingency and start-up cash (separate)
Contingency and the first-cycle working capital are shown on their own lines, never hidden inside equipment prices.

What to have ready

  • Species and life stage, annual saleable harvest target (tonnes) and number of crops per year.
  • Site country and region, land area, water source with salinity and temperature range, and any water-quality tests.
  • Production system you are considering (ponds, lined ponds, biofloc, indoor RAS) — or ask for a comparison.
  • Whether this is a new farm or an upgrade, and what infrastructure already exists.
  • Power supply and reliability, budget range, target start date and which services you need (design, equipment, installation, commissioning).

How the request is handled

  1. The FishMatch project team reviews your request; nothing is sent to suppliers automatically.
  2. If the scope is clear, qualified providers are asked to quote the same line items on the same design basis.
  3. You receive comparable quotes with inclusions, exclusions and assumptions marked. No price, timeline or result is guaranteed.

Questions about shrimp CAPEX requests

What is shrimp farm CAPEX?
CAPEX is the one-off capital investment to build the farm: land and permits, earthworks or tanks, liners, water intake and pumps, aeration, electrical supply and backup, treatment, biosecurity, buildings, any nursery or hatchery, and design, installation and commissioning. Feed, post-larvae, energy and labour are operating costs (OPEX) and are budgeted separately.
Can you give me a CAPEX per hectare for my farm?
Not without your site and design basis. Published budgets vary widely with system, scale and what is included; the cost guide shows them with their sources and scope. A usable number comes from itemised quotes for your own harvest target and site.
Why itemise instead of asking for one total?
Totals from different providers rarely include the same things. Line-by-line quotes show what each offer includes, excludes and assumes, so missing items are visible before you commit.
Who sees my request?
The FishMatch project team reviews it. Supplier identities stay private and providers are introduced only after review by David of the FishMatch Group team. There is no automatic matching or messaging.

How does FishMatch Group source suppliers for this requirement?

You submit one structured request. We translate it into a technical RFQ, run it against qualified manufacturers and integrators in the relevant categories, and return normalised quotations you can compare side by side on scope, lead time and total cost of ownership.

Do buyers see supplier names during the sourcing process?

No. Supplier identities stay confidential during discovery and evaluation. You receive anonymised, comparable technical and commercial packages, and introductions happen only after both sides are qualified and agree to proceed.

Costs & budgeting

How much does a commercial fish farm cost to build?

Budget ranges depend on system type, not on country alone. Pond and cage projects are usually the lowest capital per tonne of annual output, while recirculating (RAS) projects carry the highest equipment and energy share because filtration, oxygenation and backup power are mandatory. Reliable numbers come from a sized bill of quantities — species, target tonnage, water source and grow-out temperature — not from a generic price list. Use the FishMatch calculators to size the project, then submit an RFQ so quotes are priced against the same specification.

What drives the price differences between aquaculture equipment quotes?

Most spread between quotes comes from scope, not from margin: included spares, installation and commissioning, control and automation level, materials (HDPE vs steel vs FRP), certification and testing, delivery terms (EXW vs CIF) and warranty length. Two quotes are only comparable when they answer the same specification. A structured RFQ fixes the scope so differences reflect real engineering choices.

What operating costs should a business plan include?

Feed is normally the largest recurring cost, followed by energy (highest in RAS), labour, fingerlings or post-larvae, health management, water treatment consumables and maintenance. Financing cost and working capital for the first production cycle are frequently underestimated. FishMatch cost tools separate CAPEX from OPEX so the payback assumption is visible rather than implied.
