Belize aquaculture procurement: environmental screening and compliant project scope
In Belize, keep a farmed aquaculture project separate from wild-capture fishing activity. The Department of the Environment uses an aquaculture checklist to help identify impacts and decide whether an environmental impact assessment is required. Prepare that screening information before freezing equipment scope, and confirm every applicable permission with the responsible authority.

Aquaculture is not wild-capture fishing
- Wild-capture licences, vessel requirements and seasonal catch rules address fishing activity. They do not define a land-based farm, pond, hatchery or cage system’s environmental and operational requirements.
- Describe the farmed species, life stage, source of stock, containment, water use and discharge. Ask the relevant authority which approvals apply; do not reuse fishing-licence conditions as a farm permit.
Environmental screening before procurement
- The Belize Department of the Environment says its aquaculture checklist supports impact identification and mitigation and helps determine whether an EIA is required.
- Use the checklist questions to identify site, water, waste, construction and operating information that suppliers must reflect. Completing a checklist is not approval.
Compliance-ready equipment scope
- Separate intake, pumping, treatment, ponds or tanks, cages and moorings, aeration, monitoring, backup power, effluent handling, harvest and cold chain.
- Require each offer to state design inputs, exclusions, construction responsibilities, operating consumables and documentation needed for authority review.
Documents and decisions to keep traceable
- Keep dated versions of the site plan, process flow, water balance, effluent route, species and stock-source plan, monitoring plan and supplier assumptions.
- Record which authority question changed scope. This keeps quotations aligned with any EIA, mitigation or permit conditions that may follow.
Belize procurement brief checklist
Include site location, land or water-space rights, farmed species and stock source, production target, system boundary, measured water conditions, effluent route, power, environmental screening status, documents requested by authorities, budget and timeline. Infrastructure procurement help is reviewed by people for projects of USD 250,000 or more; buyer access is free and supplier-funded.

Belize buyer questions
Does every aquaculture project in Belize require an EIA?
Not necessarily. The DOE checklist helps the Department decide whether impacts are significant enough to require an EIA for the specific proposal.
Can a fishing licence authorize an aquaculture facility?
Do not assume so. Fishing licences address fishing activity; confirm the separate requirements for the proposed farm with the responsible authorities.
Does FishMatch provide a supplier list, approval or financing?
No. FishMatch does not publish supplier identities, grant permits, guarantee approvals or make financing decisions. Commercial infrastructure briefs of USD 250,000 or more receive human review; buyer access is free and the service is supplier-funded.
