The RAS market is fragmented between full-system integrators, component specialists and EPC contractors. That fragmentation is a buyer problem: there is no shortage of capable suppliers, only a shortage of comparable information. Species and life-stage experience at your scale

RAS engineering is species-specific and stage-specific. A supplier with strong smolt and post-smolt references is not automatically the right partner for marine grow-out, warm-water tilapia or shrimp. Ask for delivered projects with the same species, the same life stage and a comparable production volume, and for permission to speak to the owner.

The biological design basis behind the sizing

Every RAS proposal contains implicit assumptions: feed load at peak biomass, FCR, mortality, temperature, oxygen consumption per kg feed, TAN production, CO2 tolerance and target water quality. If those assumptions differ between proposals, the systems are not comparable regardless of price. Require each supplier to state the design basis explicitly in the offer.

Redundancy philosophy

Redundancy is where quotations diverge most and where the cost of being wrong is highest. Pumps, blowers, oxygen supply, backup power, controls and alarms can each be specified with none, partial or full redundancy. A cheaper proposal is frequently a less redundant proposal, which is a risk transfer to you rather than a saving.

Engineering, drawings and documentation depth

Ask what engineering is included: process flow diagrams, P&IDs, hydraulic calculations, mass balance, tank and pipe layouts, electrical single-line diagrams, control philosophy and as-built documentation. Thin engineering scope is normally recovered later as variation orders, and it is the hardest gap to see in a price comparison.

Installation, commissioning and biological start-up

Supply-only, supervised installation and full installation are three very different scopes. Clarify who provides labour, tools, cranes, local civil interfaces and consumables, how many commissioning weeks are included, and whether biological start-up support — biofilter maturation, first stocking, water-quality stabilisation — is part of the offer or a separate service.

Service, spare parts and local support

A RAS runs continuously; a failed pump or oxygen system is a biological emergency, not a maintenance ticket. Evaluate response time commitments, remote support, whether a local partner exists in your country, spare-part lead times and the recommended critical-spares package held on site.

Energy and lifecycle cost

Two systems delivering the same tonnage can differ substantially in annual electricity, oxygen and heating or cooling demand. Over ten years that difference frequently exceeds the CAPEX difference between the same two proposals. Require an annual energy estimate with stated assumptions, then compare the systems on indicative lifecycle cost.

Warranty, liability and contractual clarity

Read what is actually warranted: equipment defects, system performance under stated conditions, or nothing biological at all. Reputable suppliers do not guarantee fish performance, and a supplier that does should be treated with caution rather than enthusiasm.

State warranty duration and scope, exclusions, and what happens if water-quality targets are not met.

Warning signs

  • Pricing offered before your production basis, temperature and water source are fixed.
  • No stated feed load, FCR, mortality or design temperature in the proposal.
  • Guaranteed growth, survival or FCR figures presented as contractual.
  • Redundancy, installation, commissioning or building scope left undefined.
  • References that cannot be named, or that involve a different species or scale.
  • No local service presence and no stated spare-part lead time.

What equipment does a commercial aquaculture project actually need?

A grow-out project typically needs holding infrastructure (tanks, ponds or cages), water movement (pumps, piping, valves), aeration or oxygenation, water treatment appropriate to the system, feeding equipment, grading and handling gear, monitoring and alarms, and backup power. RAS adds mechanical filtration, biofiltration, degassing, disinfection and tighter process control. Hatchery and processing scopes are specified separately.

Which equipment should be specified before requesting quotes?

Specify the items whose sizing changes everything downstream: design biomass and stocking density, water exchange or recirculation rate, oxygen demand at peak temperature, and installed pumping head.
