Aquaculture EPC vs Independent Procurement: How to Decide
Some aquaculture projects need one accountable EPC contractor. Others save money and gain flexibility through independent, multi-supplier procurement. This supplier-neutral guide maps both routes across RAS, water treatment, hatcheries and cage systems — with a checklist to help you decide before you request a single quote.

Should I use an aquaculture EPC contractor or procure equipment independently?
Use an EPC or integrator when the project is greenfield, process-critical or requires a single performance guarantee — typical for large RAS, biosecure hatcheries and exposed cage sites. Use independent procurement when you have engineering capacity, are expanding or retrofitting, or the scope is commodity equipment where competitive RFQs create leverage. Many projects use a hybrid: EPC for process-critical systems, independent RFQs for the rest.

Full EPC or integrator delivery often makes sense for large, first-of-kind RAS facilities where process design, hydraulics and automation must be guaranteed as one system.
Independent fits when
Independent procurement fits retrofits, modular expansions and buyers with in-house engineering who can specify biofilters, drum filters, oxygenation and controls separately.
RAS quotes differ most in treatment redundancy, automation depth and what 'commissioning' includes — normalize these before comparing price.
Water treatment & filtration
EPC fits when
EPC fits when treatment is safety-critical and tightly coupled to a new build — e.g. intake treatment, disinfection and reuse loops designed with the farm.
Independent fits when
Independent procurement fits standalone upgrades: drum filters, UV, ozone, degassing and pumps are commodity-adjacent equipment where multi-supplier RFQs create real leverage.
Confirm who owns hydraulic integration and performance guarantees when treatment components come from multiple suppliers.
Hatcheries
EPC fits when
EPC fits greenfield hatcheries where biosecurity zoning, water conditioning and live-feed systems must be validated together before first stocking.
Independent fits when
Independent procurement fits hatchery expansions and equipment replacement — incubation, larval tanks, live-feed and monitoring are often sourced best-in-class per system.
Biosecurity validation responsibility must be explicit; it is the most common scope gap in mixed-supplier hatchery projects.
Cage & marine systems
EPC fits when
EPC (or a single mooring/cage integrator) fits exposed sites where cages, mooring grids, feed barges and nets must be engineered to one site-specific load analysis.
Independent fits when
Independent procurement fits sheltered sites and incremental additions where standard cage, net and feeding packages can be quoted competitively.
Site-specific mooring analysis and classification/certification scope must be priced identically across proposals.
Decision checklist
Answer these before requesting quotes. Mostly “yes” to the odd-numbered questions points toward EPC; mostly “yes” to capability questions points toward independent procurement. Either way, a comparable RFQ is the foundation.

- Do you need a single performance warranty, or are component-level warranties acceptable?
- Have you compared total cost of ownership — energy, consumables, service — not just CAPEX?
