Aquaculture Farm Energy Cost: How to Estimate Whole-Farm Power Use
Short answer: add up every load on the farm, multiply each one's real running power by its hours per year, and price the total at your full tariff plus backup fuel. There is no universal energy cost per kilogram: species, climate, water source and system design change it, so build the number from your own site data and the suppliers' written power figures.

Supplier and manufacturer listings are provided for research, transparency and discovery only. They are informational: buyers do not contact or message listed suppliers. Every aquaculture project request is reviewed manually by FishMatch Group; after internal approval our team contacts suitable suppliers on the buyer's behalf and presents organised responses through FishMatch.

The formula
Energy per load (kWh/year) = running kW at duty point × operating hours per year
Annual energy cost = Σ kWh × energy price + peak kW × demand charge × 12 + fixed fees + backup fuel
Energy cost per kg = annual energy cost ÷ kg harvested per year
Use running power, not nameplate motor size: motors seldom run at their rated load, as the US Department of Energy motor load guide explains. Run the result at today's tariff and at higher cases you choose.
Every load to include
| Load | How it runs | Ask each supplier for |
|---|---|---|
| Water pumping and recirculation | Usually continuous | kW at your duty point (flow and head), pump curve |
| Aeration, blowers and diffusers | Continuous or night-weighted | kg O₂ per kWh at your conditions, kW drawn |
| Oxygen supply (generators or liquid O₂) | With feeding load | kWh per kg O₂, or delivered price per kg |
| Heating, chilling and heat exchange | Seasonal, climate-dependent | Heat balance for your site and target temperature |
| Filtration, UV/ozone and degassing | Continuous | kW per unit and duty cycle |
| Ventilation, lighting and buildings | Daily schedule | Installed kW and operating hours |
| Controls, monitoring and alarms | Continuous (UPS-backed) | Standby and running power |
| Feed handling, processing and cold chain | Batch / harvest days | kWh per tonne processed or stored |
| Backup generator | Tests and outages | Fuel use per hour at critical load |
What data do you need to collect?
- Your electricity tariff: energy price per kWh, demand (peak kW) charges, time-of-use bands and fixed fees
- Grid reliability: typical outage hours per year at the site
- Diesel or gas price for backup generation
- Production plan: species, annual tonnes, peak feed per day
- Site climate: monthly water and air temperatures
- Each supplier's power draw at your duty point, in writing
Limits and risks
- Planning estimates are not quotes; supplier power data and an engineer's review confirm the final figure.
- Tariffs and fuel prices change; treat them as variables and test higher cases.
- Backup sizing affects risk to stock; reserve capacity alone does not guarantee survival.
